Unlike cars, towable trailers have much more frequent maintenance intervals when it comes to brakes and bearings. Most major manufacturers recommend repacking the bearings every 12,000 miles or once a year, whichever comes first. Forest River actually recommends adjusting brakes every 3,000 miles. Some trailer brakes are self adjusting....are yours?
Grease seals are designed to keep the grease on the spindle and bearings and away from your brake pades and drums. If the grease seals become damaged or blow out from impropper greasing, the grease can get into the brake pads and/or electric magnet area greatly reducing the effectiveness of your brakes. This can also cause asymmetric braking which can be extremely dangerous!
If you ever notice your trailer's brakes becoming less effective, have them inspected. Adjusting your brake controller to a higher and higher setting to compensate can cause excessive wear and friction on the electric brake magnet leading to premature failure. It can also cause asymmetric braking when it's needed most. This can be costly and dangerous.
If you've ever taken your RV to the dealer you likely already know it can be a huge hassle, if not, just search any forum or video about the experience others have had. For the same money or less, we can come to you, take the time to do it right the first time, and get your brakes and bearings ready to safely go on that next adventure.
